The regimen for pre-exposure prophylaxisは、 Day0, 7 and 21の3回の狂犬病ワクチン筋注からなる。このワクチンは通常、ウイルス感染のハイリスクグループ(e.g. veterinarians, individuals traveling to rabies endemic areas)に対して推奨されている。もし接種後にウイルスに曝露した場合、 days 0 and 3 post-exposureを受ける必要があるが、Rabies immune globulin (RabIg)は不要とされている。rabies pre-exposure prophylaxisを行っていないヒトがウイルスに曝露した場合は、days 0, 3, 7, 14, and 28の5回のワクチン筋肉内注射が必要となる。また、a dose of RabIg on day 0 のpost-exposure も必要である (ワクチンとは違う場所に接種しなければならない)。その後(曝露後接種後)にウイルスに曝露した場合は、 pre-exposure prophylaxisを受けていた場合と同じレジメとなる: 2 intramuscular doses of rabies vaccine on days 0 and 3 post-exposure。
